I'm intrigued by the old saw, "I don't go to church as an
adult because my folks made me go as a child." The same logic
follows: "I don't read as an adult, I don't eat, or brush my
teeth, or say 'thank you,' as an adult, because my folks made me
do those things as a child." First, the argument makes no sense.
But if it did make sense, it'd only indicate that we're as
equally controlled by our contrariness now as we were by our
parents' authority then and therefore, in neither case are we
