Planting Seeds

From a Mustard Seed
Children's Sermons
Object:
A package of seeds.
Message: Do any of you ever help your parents when they are out working in the yard? There is always a lot of work to do to keep your yard looking great. You have to mow and trim the lawn. You have to rake up leaves in the fall. In the spring, when everything is coming to life again after the winter, you have to plant seeds in the garden to produce the flowers and vegetables we will enjoy all summer.
We have flowers up here at the altar every Sunday. We have a local flower shop deliver them on Saturday afternoon so that the altar looks beautiful each Sunday morning. But instead of going through all that work of having the flowers delivered each week, I was thinking it would be much better if we could just grow them ourselves! I brought along a packet of seeds. As you can see from the picture these seeds are going to produce a beautiful variety of flowers that will look just terrific here. I'm going to open the packet, and start spreading the seeds around the area later, and within only a few weeks we will have all the flowers we could possibly need for our altar bouquets!
I see some of you are laughing. Don't you think this is a good idea? What is wrong with it? Oh, we have the seeds, but we don't have everything else that is necessary to make the flowers grow! What else would I need to make this work? That's right: soil, sunlight, fertilizer, water, the right temperature ... and with all of those in place, then we would have the flowers we want!
That is exactly what Jesus was talking about one day when he told the parable of the farmer who went out to sow his seeds. The seeds were all ready to produce the crop that farmer needed. However the other conditions were not quite right in most cases. Some seed fell on the roadway, and others in the thorn bushes, and still others in soil that started to grow but were stopped by other plants growing there. Only part of the seeds were in good soil!
Our faith works the same way. When we hear the Word of God, Jesus tries to plant that word in our hearts so that it grows and produces His love and care for others in our hearts. He is the farmer who plants that seed in us. But we need to spend time with Jesus, talking to Him every day, and asking Him to work in our lives, so that we become like that good soil that allows the seeds to grow.
