A GOSPEL TREASURY
Poems Based on Lectionary Gospels
Jesus said to his apostles,
'Peace be with you, peace.
and if there are doubts within you,
let all doubting cease.'
When they saw his hands and side,
they knew that it was he.
Then their joy escaped all bounds
and glad they were and free.
'Peace be with you,' once again
he said, to break the spell.
'As my Father sent me forth,
I send you forth as well.'
Breathing then his spirit on them
Jesus said, 'Receive.
Now is Holy Spirit with you.
This you can believe:
Those whose sins you have forgiv’n
will find their sure release
and those whose sins you shall retain
will find no real peace.'
What an awesome burden he has
given us who bear his name:
that the world should know forgiveness
and from whom forgiveness came.
God wants everyone forgiven,
brought again to know his love.
You and I must share the message
of forgiveness from above.
You and I, who know the good news
may not keep it for ourselves.
We must never keep the faith
tucked way up on our inner shelves.
For our faith, if great or little,
though we think we’ve none to spare,
there’s just one way to increase it.
That’s to give it out, to share.
