Object:
Make your own magic picture, using the special procedure.
Purpose: To help children understand that God is always with us even though we cannot see him.
Material: Make your own magic picture, using the special procedure.
Special Procedure: Instructions for making a magic picture:
1. Take an 8'' X 8'' piece of paper. On one side draw a fish. On the other side draw an underwater scene with seaweed and shells, etc.
2. Take a piece of cardboard and draw, paste, or trace your pictures on to it; one on each side. (Color if you desire.)
3. Punch two small holes (centered and one-half inch apart) on each side of the cardboard square.
4. Obtain two pieces of string, each about 18 inches long.
5. Thread the string through the two holes on one side and tie to make a loop.
6. Repeat on the other side.
7. Loop the string over two fingers, one end in each hand.
8. Spin the square and then pull gently on the loops; relax and pull again. Repeat as often as you want to see the picture. The fish should appear in the water.
9. Try making other pictures, like a bear on one side and a forest on the other. Have fun!
Lesson: What I want to show you today is a kind of magic picture. Here is a piece of cardboard with a picture on each side. Attached to the cardboard is a string and when you spin the cardboard, like this, there is magic. The fish is in the water. (Or the girl is on the horse; or whatever picture you have produced.) Now, of course, the picture does not move from one side to the other; it just looks that way.
This is sort of the way it is in life. We cannot see God, but we believe he is always with us. With our faith, which is like spinning the picture, we become aware of his presence. In order to be aware of God in our life, there are special things we need to do to maintain our faith. We worship, we pray, we study his word and we look for the signs of his love every day. When we do these things, we soon discover that God is with us, even though we may not really see him when we look at just one side of the picture. A strong faith helps us to know that God is a part of our lives.
