The Lord Comes With Power
Worship
Lectionary Worship Aids
Series VI, Cycle B
Call To Worship
Leader: As we worship, prepare a way for the Lord to come into your life.
People: In this Advent season we will open a highway for our God to come.
Leader: Then the glory of the Lord shall be revealed, and people everywhere shall see it.
People: We know the Lord comes, and he will feed his flock like a shepherd.
Collect
O Lord God, we know that you have revealed yourself through your Son, Jesus Christ, as a God of power who rules by love, tenderness, and gentleness. Help us as we seek to understand your will for us, and prepare our hearts that we may truly welcome the advent of the Christ Child. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
Almighty God, we confess that we have been more concerned with strengthening the power of our weapons of war than with feeding your children around the world who are starving. We seek to solve problems at home by increasing punishment rather than showing care and concern. Grant us the strength and the will to try your way as we prepare for the coming of the Prince of Peace into our world of turmoil. Amen.
Hymns
"Blessed Be The God Of Israel"
"Hail To The Lord's Anointed"
Second Sunday Of Advent
Second Lesson: 2 Peter 3:8-15a
Theme: The Patience of The Lord
Call To Worship
Leader: While you are waiting for the coming of Christmas what are you doing?
People: We have come to worship our God that we might be better prepared for Christ's coming.
Leader: While you are waiting, strive to be at peace.
People: The peace of God which passes all understanding is what we seek.
Collect
Ever-present God, may this time of worship be an occasion for us to open our hearts to you. While we wait for Christmas as an opportunity to celebrate your coming into the world in human form, make us aware that you are always ready to show yourself to us. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
Lord, we wait for a new heaven and a new earth where righteousness will reign, but we confess we have not been leading lives of holiness and godliness. We know that your Son came into the world to show us the way, but while we sing "Joy to the world, the Lord is come," we have failed to be faithful disciples. Forgive us, we pray, and through your Holy Spirit enable us to so live that we might help your kingdom to come, and your will to be done here on earth. Amen.
Hymns
"Savior Of The Nations, Come"
"Let All Mortal Flesh Keep Silence"
Second Sunday Of Advent
Gospel Lesson: Mark 1:1-8
Theme: Preparation For Christ's Coming
Call To Worship
Leader: Christ is coming! Prepare the way of the Lord.
People: What must we do to make ready?
Leader: Repent and seek God's forgiveness.
People: We confess that we are not worthy to untie Christ's shoelaces, but we come seeking God's mercy.
Collect
Lord, we are so accustomed to surfing the Internet and switching television channels that we find it difficult to concentrate. In this hour help us to fix our mind and heart on you that we might be ready for your coming. As we seek your forgiveness for past failures, show us the way to live fruitful lives that demonstrate our true repentance. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
Lord, we are getting ready to celebrate that day when Love came to dwell among us. Even as we make our preparations to mark the power of love made known to us in Jesus Christ, we must confess that we have failed to love others as we love ourselves, and we have neglected to choose service to others over show and selfishness. Help us as we seek to be the people Christ freed us to be, we pray in Jesus' name. Amen.
Hymns
"All Earth Is Waiting"
"There's A Voice In The Wilderness Crying"*
