Let Your Light Shine
Children's sermon
That Seeing, They May Believe
52 Children's Object Lessons
Object:
A candle and a jar. The jar should be large enough so that it can be placed over the top of the candle when it is lighted.
Purpose: To encourage children to share.
Lesson: Jesus said, "Let your light so shine before men, that
they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is
in heaven." (Matthew 5:16) A person's life is like a candle. The
candle can be very useful in a dark room as it gives off light.
It is doing what it was created to do.
Each one of you has a purpose in life. You are to live with
God and with one another. You are to share your life with the
world around you by doing good to others; by being kind and
showing concern. In this way, you let your light shine. As soon
as you stop living for others, as soon as you stop sharing what
you can do and what you have with others, then you lose the
purpose of life.
As I said before, this candle is like a person's life. When
the wick is lighted, it gives off the light and warmth for which
the candle was created. But watch what happens when I cover the
flame. I am using this jar so that you can see what happens.
(Cover the flame with the jar, but do not let the jar touch the
flame. Hold it there until the flame goes out.) The candle has
lost its purpose for being.
I hope you boys and girls will always be willing to share what
you have with others. In that way, your light in life will shine
brightly, to the glory of God who gave you your life for a
purpose.
Possible Times To Use This Illustration In The Home:
* At the dinner table, when candles are part of the setting.
* When the children of the family have been unwilling to share
things with others.
* During a time of electrical power failure, when candlelight
becomes essential to the living of life at night.
