Cast: JETUR -- a Chaldean
JETUR: (ENTERS DRESSED IN ROBES APPROPRIATE FOR A MAN OF HIS STATION) I am afraid I startled some of you. I humbly beg your forgiveness. I intend no harm to you. I only came to explain something to you.
Your minister has graciously offered me a few minutes to speak to you. My name is Jetur ibn Ayub (HE BOWS) and I wanted to share with you what I have learned.
It is a long involved story. I saw the Mahdi, uh, you would say hamasheah, the Messiah. Here is the way in which it happened.
My father and I are of the Chaldean class -- you would call us scientists or men of knowledge. My son also, of course. We had studied for years the stars. My father was much more knowledgable about the positioning of the heavenly bodies than was I. It was because of his knowledge that we knew about the explosion in the western sky.
My father had said that the writings of the ancient ones had prophesied the coming of the Messiah and that His birth would be announced by an announcement in the heavens.
Did not the prophet say that "... a star shall come forth out of Jacob and a scepter shall rise out of Israel" (Numbers 24:17). And again it is written: "Gentiles shall come to your light" (Isaiah 60:3). I was considered a Gentile -- an outsider.
My father, my son, and I were not believers. We believed in some higher power. After all, as I said we studied the stars. Who but an intelligent, powerful being could originate such a system?
So, we were searching the western skies for the sign of His coming as the ancient ones had written. The brightness, an explosion of great magnitude in the western sky, lasted for seventy days.
During that time many people saw the sign in the night sky and we discussed with them the possibility that that sign was the awaited sign of the king predicted in the ancient writings.
Some people agreed that it was and, of course, there were some who did not. My father and I decided to find out which were correct. We set out with my son and traveled toward the west.
We traveled to Jericho and then to Jerusalem. We thought, mistakenly, that the king of the Jews would be born in the palace of the Jews -- the palace of King Herod. So we went to visit the king.
I want to tell you the truth -- I was unwise. Usually I would have been much more clever. But I was in a hurry when we reached Jerusalem and I thought our journey was ended. I didn't think that Herod, the king, was a usurper. So, I asked him: "Where is he who is born king of the Jews?"
To a king who was insecure on his throne he must have thought I asked: "Where is the real king, you impostor?"
King Herod summoned his priests and asked them where the Messiah-king was supposed to be born. The answer was Bethlehem, a little village not far from Jerusalem.
We went there with a promise to Herod that we would return and tell him the location, which we would have done except that we were told by an angel in a dream not to do so.
We found the child and fell down and worshiped Him and presented Him the gifts from our land: gold, frankincense, and myrrh.
That is my story, a simple one, but one you all should remember and maybe you can do likewise. You see we worshiped Him. After all He was a king -- the king.
Dear friends, do not pass through this life without searching for him diligently. Do not be fooled by a false king. Find the promised one. Find Him, bring Him your gifts, and worship Him.
Don't waste your time searching for a false king. Find and worship the real King -- Jesus.
