The Kyrie - Part One
Children's sermon
Let Them Answer
(After the greeting, ask the children to come forward. Have a copy of the Kyrie for those who can read. Rehearse the words of each part with those who cannot read before they share it with the congregation. [The Kyrie is divided into three children's sermons. Taken as a whole, it requires quite a little time.] Objects: Dove, tree branch and life buoy)
This morning I'm going to have you help me with the Kyrie. Does anyone know what the Kyrie is? (LTA) Kyrie is a Latin word. It is a short form of the phrase "Kyrie eleison," which means "Lord, have mercy." What do you think the word "mercy" means? (LTA) Mercy is another way of saying "Help," or "Have compassion," or "Care." So when we say/sing "Lord, have mercy," we are asking God to help us to have compassion, to care.
Let's lead the congregation in each part of the Kyrie, shall we? In the first one we join everyone present in praying to the Lord. How do we come together? (LTA) Right, in peace. We put away our quarrels and our disagreements so we can come together to share God's peace. So our first prayer is "In peace, let us pray to the Lord." A dove and an olive branch are symbols of peace. Would someone like to place this picture/figurine and branch on the altar? (Let someone do it.) Can everyone say these words quietly with me? (LTA) Now let's say them loud enough so everyone worshiping with us can hear it and respond: In peace, let us pray to the Lord. R/ Lord, have mercy.
What do we pray for in the next part? (LTA) We pray for peace from where? (LTA) Above means from heaven, from God, for a power greater than us! We also pray for something else. Who knows what that is? (LTA) Right, our salvation. What's that? (LTA) It's a big word meaning to be saved. We are asking God to save us by his power. Do any of you like to go swimming? (LTA) If you were in the middle of the pool and got too tired to swim any further, what would you do? (LTA) I know I'd yell, "Help!" and look up to where the lifeguard was. The lifeguard would throw me a life saver, or jump in and save me from drowning. Would someone like to place this life saver on the altar to help us think about what we are asking for? (Let someone do it.) Do you ever need help with things? (LTA) What do you do? Do you ask someone who knows how to do them to help you? (LTA) That's good. God wants us to ask him for help, too. He may send us parents or teachers or friends who know what we need, or he may give us some ideas about how we can handle them in a better way. God loves to help us.
Let's say/sing that part with the congregation: (Read it through with the children quietly first.)
For the peace from above, and for our salvation, let us pray to the Lord. R/ Lord, have mercy.
