The king who rules from a cross
Prayer
Contemporary Lectionary Prayers
Based Upon Cycle C Lectionary Gospels
Gospel Theme:
The king who rules from a cross
Gospel Note:
This pericope overlaps two sections: vv. 33-38, describing the crucifixion; and vv. 39-43, dealing with the penitent thief. Luke clearly distinguishes between the people who stood watching and the rulers and soldiers who sneered and scoffed, showing the latter as universal symbols representing the enemies of the Gospel. Jesus' universal kingship is revealed by the power of divine love demonstrated to the penitent thief and by his death on the Cross for all.
Liturgical Color:
White
Suggested Hymns:
Rejoice, The Lord Is King!
The Day Is Surely Drawing Near
At The Name of Jesus
The Head That Once Was Crowned
(The Gospel theme and notes are based on the Lutheran, Episcopal and Roman Catholic text.)

Christ The King Sunday
Lord Jesus,
we are fascinated by the future.
When babies are born we love to imagine what they
will look like when they grow up.
We have learned to anticipate the stages of
physical and mental development.
We grow, we learn, we increase our understanding,
but we will never have all of the answers.
We want to know how, when, and where
your kingdom will be revealed
in all its fullness!
Is it really important for us to know
the details, Lord?
No, of course not!
Release us from the desire to be in control.
Fill us with the power of your presence.
Grant us the peace that passes understanding.
Remember us when you come into your kingdom.
Amen.
(The prayer is based on the Lutheran, Episcopal and Roman Catholic text.)
