Object: a pair of eyeglasses
Good morning, boys and girls. How many of you wear glasses? (let them answer) Some of you do. Did you know that about 100,000,000 people in the U.S. wear some kind of glasses to help them see better? That is almost half of the people in this country. Tell me how glasses help people see better? (let them answer) Some people get headaches if they do not wear their glasses. Some people can read better if they wear glasses. Some people can see far away and some people can see close up if they wear their eyeglasses, but they cannot see things far or close without them. Glasses really make a difference. If you wear glasses, you know what I mean and you are really grateful for them.
I want to tell you about something else that really makes a difference. I want to tell you about the differences that Jesus Christ makes to us. The writer of the book of Hebrews, which is a very beautiful book in the New Testament, tells us how good it is to have Jesus make a difference in our lives. Let me tell you about it!
This writer remembered how people knew God before Jesus came. People knew God as someone of whom they were afraid because of his terrible power. They used to think about the way that God would punish them for the things they did and how he caused them great trouble. That's the way the people of the Old Testament thought about their God. He was a God who was great, but he was also to be feared.
Now the writer of Hebrews says Jesus really made a difference. People came to know God a lot better, and they understood that God is filled with love, and that he is always ready to forgive them instead of punish them.
Jesus helped people to see God better, just like eyeglasses help people to see other things better. Jesus makes a difference. Perhaps the next time you put on your glasses, or you see someone else put on their glasses, you will think to yourselves how glad you are that there are glasses to wear. But at the same time, you can also think about how Jesus and glasses are a lot alike. They both help us to see better. Of course we are really grateful for Jesus because he has helped us to see that our God is more than a terrible judge. God is a loving Father.
