Jesus Is A And Z

Matthew To Revelation
Object: a package of film, a camera, and some snapshots
Good morning, boys and girls. When we read the Bible, pray our prayers, and sing our hymns, we are talking about the way we belong to Jesus and the way Jesus belongs to us. Sometimes people wonder if Jesus was just someone who lived a long time ago like other people and then died and went away. Is Jesus like other men or is he different? Today we have one of those answers. The Bible tells us that Jesus was at the beginning of the world and that we will be at the end of it. He said it a little differently when he called himself the A and the Z, the beginning and the end.
Let me show you in a different way. If I showed you my camera and told you that I wanted to take your picture, you would want to know if I have any film in the camera. Is that right? (let them answer) You need film to start with, don't you? (let them answer) The film is the beginning and I cannot do anything without film. Jesus is like the film. He was at the beginning of the world, just like my film is the beginning of the picture--taking. I am going to put my film in the camera so that when I take a picture of you, there will be an end. Do you know what the end of picture--taking is? (let them answer) That's right; a picture. After today's worship service is over, I will take all of your pictures with my film in the camera, outside of the church. Next week I will be able to show you what you look like today because your pictures will be printed on some special paper. This print, or picture, is also like Jesus because he said that he is not only at the beginning of the world, but also at the end of it, waiting for us. Jesus is the A and Z, the beginning and the end, the film and the picture.
It makes me feel good to know that Jesus did not just make the world, live in it for a little while, and then leave it. Jesus did make it, he lives in it, works in it, and will be here at the end when he will make a new world for all of us who love him.
Jesus is the beginning and the end, and the next time that you see someone take a picture and you know that there is film in the camera, I hope that you will think about what we said about Jesus today.
