When the Romans ruled Israel at the time of Jesus, they had an interesting custom about this time of year. A crowd of people would gather in front of the governor, and they could vote on releasing any prisoner they wanted from prison. It could be a murderer, a thief, a terrorist -- anyone. Every year at this time, one person put in prison for a crime would be given his freedom, and the people got to choose which prisoner that would be.
