The conversation was going well. I respected my new friend's intellectual prowess. He seemed to be able to speak intelligently on every subject. When we got to the subject of religion, he said quite casually, "I can't believe in God." Knowing the difference between head knowledge and heart knowledge, I replied, "You mean, you can't bring yourself to follow him?" "No," he retorted, "I mean, I really can't believe that God exists. How can anyone believe in God when the world is as messed up as it is?
