How Much Protection Do You Have?

Object:
At least one bottle of sunscreen or suntan lotion with the SPF plainly visible. Several bottles with differing SPF's would be helpful.
Do you know what this stuff is? (Children respond.) It's sunscreen. We used to call this suntan lotion, but now we don't care so much about getting a tan as we do about protecting ourselves from the sun. What does sunscreen do? (Children respond. Offer help if necessary.) It keeps us from getting burned by the sun. We spread it all over our bodies before we go outside and it helps us not get burned so quickly. If you've ever had a sunburn, you know how painful that can be. Sunscreen protects us from that kind of pain.
Let me show you something. (Display SPF number.) See this number? This number tells us how much protection we have. If the number is low, like two or four, we don't have much protection and we shouldn't stay out in the sun too long, but if the number is high, like thirty or forty-five, we're well-protected and we can stay out longer.
Wouldn't it be great if we had some kind of sin screen? Something we could rub on to protect us from sin? Something that would keep us from doing wrong things? That would be terrific, but we don't have anything like that. What we do have is the Bible. If I rub my Bible all over myself, will that keep me from doing wrong? Of course not!
How can the Bible protect me from sin? You see, the more we read the Bible and the more we learn about the way God wants us to live, the more we will choose to follow him instead of choosing to do wrong. If we only learn a little about the Bible, it's like using sunscreen with a low number. (Display low number SPF lotion.) We only get a little help, but if we study the Bible and learn as much as we can, it's like using the sunscreen with a high number (display bottle) and we get lots of help in choosing to do right instead of wrong.
I hope you use sunscreen when you're out in the sun so you won't get burned, but I especially hope you are using the Bible to give you help when you're tempted to do wrong, and to learn how to be the person God wants you to be.
I'll be praying for you this week. God bless you.
