crayfish
Scripture: 1 Thessalonians 5:21
... but test everything; hold fast to what is good.
Material: crayfish
Does anybody know what this is? It looks like a baby lobster, but it is really a crayfish. Some people would say, "crawdad."
Lobsters, you know, live in the ocean where the water is salty. Crayfish live in creeks and even rivers and ponds where the water is fresh, or not salty. Crayfish like to hide down on the bottom of the stream, under rocks and roots of trees. They wait in their little hiding places until a fish or a tadpole comes by and then, whoosh! They jump out of hiding and grab their dinner with this big claw. (indicate large claw) Crayfish also eat worms and bugs ... or anything that is dead in the water.
Crayfish are also good to eat. In some places, people have big parties and cook lots and lots of crayfish in many different recipes. Big fish like to eat them, too. You can use a crayfish on your hook to go fishing.
The thing I notice most about our crayfish is his big claw. I don't want to put my finger in the water because I am sure he will pinch me. I have seen this crayfish grab a little stick and hold it. But when he tests it and finds out it is not good food, he lets it go. When he finds something to eat, though, he grabs it with his claw and holds on tight.
We can learn from the crayfish. When we find something that is not good for us, we should let it go right away. But when we find something good, hold on tightly. That's what God wants us to do!
