31 Object Lessons from Nature
Object:
butterfly larvae that should be large enough to see by now (For purposes of continuity, place them on a fresh bouquet of the same greens you brought before, but keep a few leaves that have obvious chewed spots.)
Scripture: 1 Peter 2:2
Like newborn infants, long for the pure, spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow into salvation.
Material: butterfly larvae that should be large enough to see by now (For purposes of continuity, place them on a fresh bouquet of the same greens you brought before, but keep a few leaves that have obvious chewed spots.)
Well, well, well, what have we here? (look closely at the bouquet) I see something crawling around in these leaves. You know what? It looks like my butterfly eggs have hatched out some little caterpillars and they are starting to grow! Last week, we had to have faith and believe that those little butterfly eggs would hatch. Now I have to have faith that these caterpillars will turn into butterflies! They don't look like beautiful butterflies now, but they will some day!
Wow! (pick up one of the leaves that is partially eaten) Look at that! These little guys are really hungry. Look how they made holes in this leaf! You know, I've been watching these fellows ever since they hatched, and they only seem to do two things: Eat and grow. Eat and grow. They are feeding (emphasize that word -- it is probably a new one in this context to most of the children) on these leaves. That is what is making them grow so fast.
We can learn something from these little caterpillars, boys and girls. Just like the caterpillars are feeding on these leaves, we should feed on the Word of God! No, I don't mean we should tear the pages out of our Bibles and eat them. To feed on the Word of God, all we have to do is read it and think about it. Or, if you don't know how to read yet, ask Mom and Dad to read it for you or tell you Bible stories. Just like these baby butterflies grow by feeding on leaves, we can grow in spirit by feeding on the Word of God.
