Children's sermon

Matthew To Revelation
(Appropriate for Christmas)
Object: a famous secret recipe (such as Kentucky Fried Chicken)
Good morning, boys and girls. The time has almost come and we are only a few hours away from the day that you have been waiting for. Just think, it is almost Christmas and you have made it. Is there any other day in the whole year that you wait for so much as for Christmas day? (let them answer) I don't think so. Waiting for Christmas is something that people have done even before there was a Christmas. For thousands of years people waited for the promise of God that a Savior would be delivered. Everyone knew there would be a Savior, but the Savior did not come until that night almost 2,000 years ago in the small town of Bethlehem. Jesus was almost like a secret recipe that someone was keeping.
I have with me this morning a piece of chicken that is called Kentucky Fried Chicken. It tastes a little different than any other chicken you can find. It is made with a secret recipe that was invented by a man a number of years ago. Only a very few people in this country know how to make Kentucky Fried Chicken, because the secret is kept in a place where they make the batter to put on the chicken. And the people there want to keep it a secret so that no one else can make it.
God knew the secret of Jesus, and when he was going to send that secret into the world; he told no one of the day that Jesus was coming. It was God's secret to be kept until just the right time. Only then did God tell the rest of the world what he had known for thousands of years. Jesus was saved for just the right moment when everything was according to God's plan.
It isn't easy to keep a secret. How many of you know a secret that no one else knows? (let them answer) If you have a secret, you usually want to tell it so that someone can share it with you. But God kept his secret all to himself so that no one would know the time of Jesus' coming until the moment had come.
Keeping secrets is not easy for anyone, but God kept his secret until he knew that everything was just right. The next time you see some Kentucky Fried Chicken, or you have a secret to keep to yourself, you will remember the time that God had a secret he had to keep about the coming of Jesus. And he kept it a long time. It was a wonderful secret, and one that we are all glad he kept until the night in Bethlehem. God bless you very much.
