God's values versus the world's
Prayer
Contemporary Lectionary Prayers
Based Upon Cycle C Lectionary Gospels
Gospel Note:
Luke's ''Sermon on the Plain,'' which begins here, is shorter and less spiritualized than Matthew's corresponding ''Sermon on the Mount'' (Matthew 5-7), but similar in structure. Luke's version, however, paints a sharper contrast between the values of God's coming rule and those of the world: whereas the world appreciates wealth and the ''happy'' life of 'success'' that it brings, these are incompatible with God's reign and inimical to that coming reality.
Liturgical Color:
Green
Suggested Hymns:
O Christ, Our Hope
Lord Jesus Think On Me
Oh, That The Lord Would Guide My Ways
Amid The World's Bleak Wilderness
I Am Trusting You, Lord Jesus
Your Word, O Lord, Is Gentle Dew

Epiphany 6
Faithful Lord,
we tend to trust what our eyes can see.
We are quick to discount the faith you have
placed within our hearts.
Another week has passed and we have repeatedly
turned aside from your will.
It seems that our best intentions are undermined
by the values of the world and the poor choices
we make.
We feel relaxed and comfortable as we gather in
this place for worship today. We would like to
remain here because it is quiet, safe and secure.
However, you did not call us so that we could
be relaxed and comfortable in that sense.
You have called us to enter the mission field.
You have called us to blessedness.
Help us to move beyond the limitations of what
our eyes can see.
Bring our faith into focus, and by your grace,
lead us to make right choices.
Amen.
