CALLED TO JERUSALEM: SENT TO THE WORLD
Sermons For Lent And Easter
"Christ is risen!" "He is risen indeed!"
Since the early centuries Christians have greeted one another on Easter morning with these excited acciamations, affirming the joyous news of Easter. The tradition continues to this day among Russian and Ukrainian Christians1 - and among an increasing number of our contemporary brothers and sisters who are rediscovering the venerable old custom. It is as the ancient seventh-century hymn bids us:
Come you faithful, raise the strain
Of triumphant gladness!
God has brought his Israel
Into joy from sadness!2
