Pastor: Good morning, Peter. It's good to have you here this morning.
Peter: It's good to be here, even though I didn't sleep well last night.
Pastor: Oh, what was the matter?
Peter: I plugged my electric blanket into the toaster and kept popping out of bed.
Pastor: Well, I see you're still telling those awful jokes. Tell me, Peter, how come you were running when I saw you last night?
Peter: I was stopping a fight.
Pastor: How could you be stopping a fight when you were running away?
Peter: Because, it was between me and this other guy.
Pastor: Seriously, Peter, you don't look so good. What's the matter?
Peter: Oh, nothing.
Pastor: Well, you sure look like something's wrong.
Peter: Well, if you must know, I just realized I've gotten into a terrible habit.
Pastor: I thought something was wrong.
Peter: I even did it to you just then.
Pastor: You did? What did you do to me?
Peter: I lied to you.
Pastor: You did? I didn't know.
Peter: That's the trouble. Lots of times the person you lie to doesn't know. So, you think you're getting away with it. But you're not, God knows.
Pastor: That's right, God knows everything. But what did you lie to me about?
Peter: I just told you nothing was wrong with me ... and something was.
Pastor: Oh.
Peter: It has become as easy for me to lie as it is to tell the truth.
Pastor: Boy, you do have a bad habit.
Peter: Yeah, and bad habits are a lot easier to make than to break.
Pastor: And lying is a bad habit that's easy to get into, isn't it?
Peter: It sure is, and once you tell a lie it grows.
Pastor: That's right. You have to tell another lie to cover up the first one.
Peter: And another, and another.
Pastor: And God doesn't want us to lie. In fact in the book of Proverbs it says that God hates lying. In Proverbs 6:16-19 it says: "There are ... things the Lord hates ..."; and then it lists seven things including "a lying tongue."
Peter: I always thought God was a God of love.
Pastor: He is, but he hates evil things.
Peter: Then I guess he does hate lying.
Pastor: I guess you do have a problem.
Peter: Can you help me, Pastor? Can you help me stop lying?
Pastor: I don't know. Only God can do that, but you have got to let him.
Peter: How?
Pastor: Well, you made a good start. You know you are sinning when you lie.
Peter: If that's a good start, wow, do I have a good start!
Pastor: Well, I think the next thing you should do is ask God to forgive you for all the lies you have told.
Peter: Okay, what next?
Pastor: Ask God to help you not to lie anymore. Ask God to remind you when you are doing it so you can stop before you tell it; or at least before you finish it.
Peter: Okay, but it won't be easy.
Pastor: And then, every time you forget and tell a lie, ask God right then to forgive you.
Peter: Out loud?
Pastor: Well, I don't think that's necessary. But you will want to change your lie to the truth right then. And you will have to do that out loud.
Peter: You mean I have to tell the person I lied to that I lied to them?
Pastor: I guess so. After all, if you're really sorry, you don't want to leave them thinking the lie is the truth, do you?
Peter: Well, no.
Pastor: If you do those things, I bet you'll stop lying in no time.
Peter: Thanks. I'm going to start right now. Oh say, I've got a question. What if somebody asks me something I don't want to tell them. Is it all right to lie then?
Pastor: Of course not. Just tell them the truth. Tell them you don't want to tell them.
Peter: Yeah, I guess I could do that. Well, I guess I'd better be going now. So long, boys and girls. Keep away from the bad habit of lying ... God doesn't like it.
