Object: a referee's shirt and whistle
Good morning, boys and girls. Do you like to make other people happy? (let them answer) Here are some ways to do that. Every night you are going to do your homework, pay attention to what your teachers tell you, come to church every Sunday, help your parents with the dishes, and keep your room clean. If you do all those things you will make a lot of people happy. How many of you have decided to make other people happy? (let them answer) That's great.
Do you like people to treat you fairly? (let them answer) What do you think it means when you say, "Treat people fairly"? (let them answer) Most of us think that being fair means to treat everyone the same. How many of you think that God is fair? (let them answer) All of you think that God is fair.
I have a shirt and a whistle this morning that I hope you know something about. (show them the shirt) What do we call this kind of a shirt? Who wears it? (let them answer) That's right; a referee. What does a referee do? (let them answer) He makes sure that the game is played fairly. Does he have a favorite team? (let them answer) Does he root for one team against another? (let them answer) No! He'd better not. If he is a good referee, he does not have a favorite team, and he is fair to whoever is playing the game. The referee shows no partiality. That is a big word but an important one. Can you say it with me? Partiality.
The Bible teaches us that God shows no partiality. God is always fair. God treats you and all of your friends the same. God does not have favorites. He doesn't like you better than he likes others. God is the best referee in the whole world.
Peter found this out one day when he was thinking about God, and he told everyone that he knew about it. Some people used to think that they were special to God because they lived in a certain place or had a special father and mother. Peter said no, that isn't right. God treats all people the same and loves everyone and not some people more than other people.
The next time you go to a game or watch one on television and you see a referee with this kind of a shirt on and blowing his whistle you can think about how God is fair to all and loves everyone the same. That is something for us all to remember.
