God, the Deliverer
Worship
LECTIONARY WORSHIP AIDS
Call to Worship
Pastor:
We worship a God who intervenes in history to deliver his people.
People:
God did a mighty thing when he called Moses to deliver the Israelites from Egypt.
Pastor:
The God who revealed himself through Moses is the same God who has revealed himself to us through his Son.
People:
We praise God for our deliverance from sin, and hope of sharing in his kingdom.
Collect
Most gracious God, you always know where your people are, and come to their rescue! Give us clear minds and open hearts to know who you are; that we may find that promised rest in the security of your love which you have revealed through your Son, our Savior. ln his name we pray. Amen.
Prayer of Confession
We question life so often, Cod, and wonder why things are as they are. In our doubts, we often become blind to your revelation in Christ, and the deliverance he gives. Forgive us when we grope in despair, unable to see what you are trying to show us. Be Our Deliverer, and rescue us from our slavery to sin; that we may come alive to praise and serve you. In our Savior's name we pray. Amen.
Hymns
"God of Our Life"
"Guide Me, O Thou Great Jehovah"
"How Great Thou Art"
"O Lord, Our Fathers Oft Have Told"
PROPER 12
Sunday between July 24 and 30 inclusive
Second Lesson: Romans 8:26-30
Theme:
God's Spirit enables us to pray
Call to Worship
Pastor:
Prayer is communion with God; but sometimes we do not know how to express our feelings to God.
People:
We still pray to God, even if it is feelings only, without words.
Pastor:
That is because God's Spirit comes to us in prayer, and communicates to God with words we are unable to express.
People:
We praise God for his Spirit which intercedes on our behalf!
Collect
Gracious Father, whose Spirit joins us in our prayers, enabling us to share our deepest feelings with you: Make us sensitive to the presence of your Spirit as we pray, that we may be honest and sincere in the sharing of our souls with you. Hear us through Christ our Lord. Amen.
Prayer of Confession
We believe in prayer, Father, but we feel inadequate, and inexperienced. We are frustrated with not knowing how to say what we feel; and so we pray too little. Forgive us for not depending more on your Spirit to support us in our prayers. Keep us in the spirit of prayer; that we may have better communion with you, and receive the strength which you provide through prayer. In our Savior's name we pray. Amen.
Hymns
"Blessed Jesus, at Thy Word"
"O Gracious Father of Mankind"
"Prayer Is the Soul's Sincere Desire"
"Sweet Hour of Prayer"
PROPER 12
Sunday between July 24 and 30 inclusive
Gospel:
Matthew 13:44-52
Theme:
Parables of the Kingdom
Call to Worship
Pastor:
No greater value can be placed on anything than the Kingdom of Heaven. And it is offered to each of us!
People:
There is no comparison of God's Kingdom with anything of earthly value.
Pastor:
But if we value earthly things too much, we may lose the Kingdom. The choice is ours.
People:
We want more than anything in the world to be in God's Kingdom. May God help us keep our priorities in order.
Collect
O God our Father: You have put within our reach the blessings of your Kingdom, more valuable than our minds can comprehend! Give us the wisdom to keep all our possessions and desires subordinate to your Kingdom; that we may receive the blessings inherent in your Kingdom. In our Savior's name we pray. Amen.
Prayer of Confession
We are obsessed with being accepted into your Kingdom, Father. But we also enjoy the fine pleasures and possessions of this world. Forgive us when we take for granted our entrance into your Kingdom while we invest in this world's attractions. Convince us of the choice we must make of surrendering all for the sake of your Kingdom; that we may not be led astray, thinking we can have the best of two worlds. We pray through Christ our Lord. Amen.
Hymns
"Be Thou My Vision"
"Come, Thou Almighty King"
"Take My Life, and Let It Be Consecrated"
