David And Goliath

Story Time At The Altar

The lion slowly approached the sheep, who, eating the grass, was unaware of the lion about to eat him. David, the shepherd boy, taking care of the sheep, leaped to his feet, grabbing his slingshot as he did. Placing five small, smooth, sharp stones in his slingshot, he slung them through the air at the lion. As David held his rescued sheep, his heart pounded. Now he had time to be afraid. So sitting beside the flowing stream, he picked up his harp to calm his heart, singing his praise to God: "The Lord is my shepherd. I shall not want." As David sang, it seemed the hills echoed his praise to God whose "steadfast love is better than life."
"Fee! Fie! Foe! Fum! I smell the blood of a Hebrew son!" the giant, Goliath, roared and the earth shook, as David, the small boy, stood before the giant! He wore no armor. It was too heavy for a small boy. He had no sword, only a slingshot and five smooth stones, wet from the brook, but he had trust in God.
David had killed a lion. Now David killed a giant. David, the young shepherd boy, became the courageous champion of his people, for Goliath, like the lion, wanted to devour his people.
Talk together: What do you like best about this story? David didn't pick the fight with Goliath, but he didn't run from him either. How did he prepare himself? All of us have "giants" to fight. What "giant" did Martin Luther King, Jr., fight? Gandhi? Jonas Salk? They fought their giants as Jesus fought his, because they knew God. David was small, but he was brave and outwitted his giant because God was with him.
Prayer: Lord, give us courage and guidance to conquer our "giants," because we know you are with us. Amen.
