Object:
The wildflower, Queen Anne's Lace. Red food dye.
Purpose: To show that the type of world we live in affects us.
Material: The wildflower, Queen Anne's Lace. Red food dye.
Special Procedure: Cut two flowers from the wildflower known as Queen Anne's Lace. Place one cut stem in water colored with red food dye. Let it remain in the water until the flower is colored. (If Queen Anne's Lace is not available, you might try another white flower to see if it will work also.)
Lesson: This morning I would like you to look at something that we can see everywhere at this time of the year. Does anyone know what this flower is called? ... (Queen Anne's Lace.) Notice how nice and white it is. Now, let me show you a different Queen Anne's Lace. This one is colored red. Let me tell you how I did this. After I cut off the flower and took it home, I placed it in a glass of water that I colored by adding red food dye. Then I just waited and in a day or so, the flower took on the color of its new surroundings.
The lesson from this is simple. The conditions under which we live have an effect upon us. If the people in your house are always fighting with one another that will make you feel unhappy inside and it will show in the way you look and act. The things you watch on television can affect how you feel
about what is important in life and that can affect what you do. The type of friends you have can also affect the way you behave. We all need to be careful about the conditions that surround us as we live each day, for they can influence how we feel inside. And how we feel inside can change how we act toward other people. Now, I hope your time in church will help you to know that you are loved by God and by the members of your church family. Knowing that, I hope it will make you happy and that you will be more loving to others.
