Celebrate God's redemptive acts in history
Worship
LECTIONARY WORSHIP AIDS
Call to Worship
Pastor:
History is full of evidence that God has been real to his people.
People:
We rejoice in our faith heritage which witnesses to a God who saves his people.
Pastor:
From the first Passover to the Last Supper, we are reminded that God is our Deliverer. The blood of the Lamb is the mark of our salvation.
People:
We celebrate with thanksgiving, the assurance we have that God will most certainly bring us into his glory forever and ever! Amen.
Collect
Gracious God, by your hand you delivered the Israelites out of Egypt. By the death of your Son, you deliver us out of the power of sin. Come to us now as we remember these great events, and mark us as people of your Kingdom now and forever; that we may celebrate these great acts in history as symbols of our own deliverance. In our Savior's name we pray. Amen.
Confession
Forgive us, O God, when we remember the redemptive acts of your mercy without identifying with the redemption they represent. Deliver us from the sins which enslave us; that we may be free to celebrate the power of your love, and rejoice in your salvation. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen.
Hymns
"Amazing Grace!"
"O My Soul, Bless God the Father"
"Pass Me Not, O Gentle Savior"
"What Wondrous Love Is This"
PROPER 13
Sunday between July 31 and August 6 inclusive
Second Lesson: Romans 8:31-39
Theme:
Christ makes us victorious
Call to Worship
Pastor:
God's love is a permanent gift which can never be taken from us.
People:
Jesus has made that love forever ours through his death on the cross.
Pastor:
There are still strong powers of evil in our world; but they cannot separate us from God's love.
People:
We are certain that God gives us victory over all these powers, keeping us in his love through Christ Jesus our Lord!
Collect
Almighty God, whose love in Christ can never be taken away from us by any worldly power: Deepen our faith in Christ, that his victory on the cross may become our victory over sin and evil. In our Savior's name we pray. Amen.
Prayer of Confession
We do not believe, Father, that the Christian Faith is a mental escape from the reality of sin, or death, or any other evil force. But while we know these powers are real we still fail to experience the victory of Christ which keeps us secure in your love. Forgive us for our spiritual weakness when we have ignored the power of Christ in our lives. Show us the victory which is ours in Christ, that we may live in the strength of your love forever. We pray in Jesus' name. Amen.
Hymns
"Jesus, Thine All-Victorious Love"
"Love Divine, All Loves Excelling"
"O Love Divine, How Sweet Thou Art"
"O Love That Wilt Not Let Me Go"

Gospel:
Matthew 14:13-21
Theme:
Jesus feeds the five thousand
Call to Worship
Pastor:
The feeding of the five thousand illustrates Jesus' willingness, and ability, to satisfy man's hunger.
People:
The hunger we experience in our souls is also satisfied by our Lord.
Pastor:
Jesus' disciples helped him feed the crowd. And Jesus needs his church today to help satisfy our world's deepest hunger.
People:
We give ourselves to our Lord to share in his ministry to our world.
Collect
Heavenly Father, whose Son is unlimited in his ability to satisfy our needs: Give us receptive hearts to his ministry on our behalf; and use us in his ministry to serve others who hunger for his Word. Thus may our world know the satisfaction of feeding on our Savior's love. In his name we pray. Amen.
Prayer of Confession
Dear Father, we know the satisfaction of being nurtured by your Son. But we still go astray, only to find our hunger unsatisfied. Forgive us when we have walked away even as you invite us to partake of your blessings. Forgive us, too, for our failure to be in ministry, sharing your blessings with others. Feed us, Lord, till we want no more, and then send us forth to share our overflowing blessings with others. We pray in our Savior's name. Amen.
Hymns
"Bread of the World"
"Break Thou the Bread of Life"
"Come, Sinners, to the Gospel Feast"
"Guide Me, O Thou Great Jehovah"
