The Sermon:
There was a boy who had big trouble with his mouth. His words hurt. They were bad words. He talked back to his parents and his teacher. He said things that hurt others in his class. His mouth never seemed to say anything nice. One day, his mother couldn't stand it any more. She washed his mouth out with soap. He was quiet the rest of the day, but the next day, it was the same filthy mouth again. The soap hadn't helped. What was wrong with that boy? Jesus knows what was wrong. Listen to what he says in Matthew 12:34, "For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks."
The boy's heart was full of bad things. The heart that Jesus speaks of here is not the muscle pumping blood through our bodies. *We do have a heart that doctors can listen to with a stethoscope, but that is not what Jesus is talking bout. He was talking about our feelings, the way we think, where we have love or hate, sympathy for others, and good or bad thoughts. When we say we have Jesus in our hearts, it means we love him and want to please him. Our mouths will say things that are in our hearts.
None of us have perfect hearts. All of us, at some time, think bad things, say bad things, and do bad things, and we need cleansing. Soap won't help. What will help? The Bible tells us in 1 John 1:7, "... the blood of Jesus ... cleanses us from all sin."
The bad things we say or do are called sins and only Jesus can clean them away. Then verse 9 says, "If we confess our sins, he who is faithful and just will forgive us our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness."
If we say we're sorry, God will keep his promise. He will forgive us and clean us from all our wrong. When we know we've done wrong, we tell God we're sorry and he cleans our hearts.
Yes, God forgives us and cleans us, but we should always try to do only what is good because sin, bad things, always hurts someone. Let's try.
