A Big Problem

Object: a blackboard, some chalk, and a division problem
Good morning, boys and girls. Today we are going to get back to school a little early. I want to work a math problem on this board, so that I can teach you something about the way God feels about the people of this world. All of us have wondered why everyone does not believe and trust in God. Why do certain people seem to do all of the things that God says are wrong when God tells us that he loves all of us?
That is a big problem, but an old problem. I have a big problem, too, and I want to figure it out, so I have brought along my blackboard, my chalk, and my problem. This is my problem. I can clean about four rooms at the church in an hour. It must be done by tomorrow. The church is a big place, and I think there are about 32 rooms in the whole church. Some of the rooms are much bigger than others, but some are also much smaller. I want to know how many people it will take to clean the church. Can you figure that problem out for me? (let them answer, but go over the problem again)
The way to find the answer is to divide the number of rooms that must be cleaned by the number of rooms that I can clean in an hour. (do the problem) That means that I need eight people if I want to do it in one hour, or four people if I want to do it in two hours. To find the answer I must divide.
Jesus talked about dividing also. Some people thought that Jesus just came to earth to bring us all together, and that it did not make any difference what was right or wrong. They thought Jesus was supposed to be like glue. But Jesus said that this wasn't true. Some things are more important than this, and so Jesus said he would be dividing us. There would be some people who would follow what he taught, and some people who would not follow what he taught. That means that they will be divided. It is the answer to the problem. Jesus is the divider. He teaches us right from wrong. He teaches us what is true and what is untrue. He tells us that we must follow him. If we do follow him, we are on one side. If we do not follow him, we are on the other side. Of course, the church is teaching us that we should do what Jesus teaches and follow him, but we all know that there is another side, and Jesus is not going to change to make the people who do wrong and believe wrong a part of his side.
Maybe the next time you are working a big problem that has to do with dividing, you will remember that Jesus is the big divider, and that we must choose which side we are going to be on.
