Believing What God Says

Have you ever heard someone say, "You can't believe everything you read," or "You can't believe everything you hear"? Most of the time, that is good advice. You can't believe everything you read or hear because people do not always tell the truth. Sometimes they exaggerate and sometimes they tell stories.
Suppose I told you that I was almost late this morning because a big, green alien came in my room and ate my alarm clock. Would you believe that? Of course not. I was almost late because I kept turning off the alarm until I ran out of time. What if you read in a magazine that you could get rich if you sent someone all the money you had? Would you believe that? I hope not. You have to be careful about what you read and hear; not everything is the truth.
You can't believe everything you read or hear unless God says it. People might try to trick us or they may even tell us lies, but if God says it, we can believe it.
Do you know the story about Noah and the ark? Noah lived in a time when people had become very mean and evil. God was sorry he had made them so he decided to get rid of them -- all of them except Noah and his family. Noah was a good man who loved and obeyed God. He and his family were to be saved along with two of each kind of animal God had created. Everything and everyone else would be destroyed by a big flood.
God told Noah that it was going to rain. Not just a little drizzle, mind you, but enough rain to cause a big flood, enough rain to destroy the earth. It sounded hard to believe. But that didn't matter; God said it would happen and Noah did believe it.
God instructed Noah to build an ark so he and his family would be safe. What's an ark? (Children respond.) It's a big ship. I suspect Noah looked silly out there building a big boat, claiming a flood was coming when it wasn't even raining.
Some of the mean people probably came around to laugh and make fun of Noah and his family. They might have said something like, "Hey, Noah, going on a cruise?!" "Why are you wasting your time building an ark, Noah, why don't you just buy an umbrella?!" "Noah, that ark looks like a box of animal crackers!" But Noah didn't pay any attention to them. Maybe they didn't believe what God had told Noah, but Noah believed it. He went right on doing what God had asked him to do.
Guess what happened? (Children respond.) It began to rain, and it rained and it rained and it rained. Before long, the flood waters came and destroyed everything, everything that is, except Noah, his family, and the animals. It happened just like God said it would. Noah had listened to God and now he was safe.
We cannot believe everything we read or hear unless we hear it from God. Read your Bible, say your prayers, and pay attention to what God is trying to tell you.
God bless you.
