Pastor: Hello, there! What's your name?
Peter: Oh, hello, my name is Peter.
Pastor: Well, Peter, why are you here this morning?
Peter: I've come to talk to the kids about church membership.
Pastor: Oh, I see. Are you a member of the church yourself?
Peter: Not exactly.
Pastor: What do you mean, "not exactly"?
Peter: Well, to be a good church member you must be a real person. You see, without your help I couldn't talk or move, but with your help I can tell all the boys and girls about being a church member.
Pastor: Okay then, Peter. What is a church member?
Peter: It is someone who becomes a member of a church! (Chuckles)
Pastor: I know that. But how do you become a church member?
Peter: Well, it's like this. There are five basic steps to becoming a church member.
Pastor: What's number one?
Peter: Number one is the most important of them all! You must know Jesus Christ as your personal Savior. When you ask Christ to come into your heart and forgive you of your sins and you believe that he died, was buried, and rose again for you ... then you are a Christian and ready to become a church member.
Pastor: That's very interesting, Peter. What's number two?
Peter: Number two is to be baptized. Jesus was baptized according to the Bible, and wants us to share in this experience. To be baptized is to show all persons what God has already done in your heart.
Pastor: Good. Now what is number three?
Peter: Number three is to accept the rules and teachings of the church you become a part of.
Pastor: And number four?
Peter: Number four pertains to stewardship, and that means to support God's church with your time, talents, and treasure!
Pastor: Wait a minute! You're going too fast! Let me think now ... number one is to know Jesus as your personal savior, number two is to be baptized, and number three is to accept the teachings of my local church.
Peter: So far, so good.
Pastor: Number four is to agree to support God's church with my time, talent, and treasure. Yes, I think I've got it. What's number five?
Peter: I have a problem with five.
Pastor: You have a problem with number five?
Peter: Well, you see I only have four fingers and I just ran out of fingers and ...
Pastor: (Interrupts) Peter, you may only have four fingers, but you can still give us rule number five.
Peter: Yeah, I suppose so. You kids are lucky to have five fingers! Well, number five is to have the present membership welcome you into the church fellowship. They extend the right hand of fellowship!
Pastor: That's terrific, Peter! You surely have given us something to think about concerning church membership. Thank you for coming this morning!
Peter: You're welcome. I'll see you later. See you later, boys and girls.
