Be A Believer

Matthew To Revelation
Object: a pitcher of water, some cups, and some cooking oil
Good morning, boys and girls. Today is a very special day for all people who believe in Jesus Christ and are gathered together in worship. Look at the faces of the people who are here today. God calls them saints and we call them saints. These are believers. Did you know that (name of a church member) is a believer? (let them answer) Did you know that (name of a church member) is a believer? (let them answer)
Let me show you what I mean. I brought along some small cups and I would like to pour something out of this pitcher. (begin to fill the cups with water) When you have your cup filled you may drink it. Now tell me what you drank. (let them answer) That's right; water. It is good water and it is good for us. I want you to pretend that what you drank is the faith that your mother and father, your pastor, your Sunday school teacher, and all of your friends who are Christians have shared with you. Your faith is filled with love, forgiveness, hope, joy, and all of the other good things that God gives to us. Can you imagine that you just received something like I just described? (let them answer)
One Christian gives to another Christian the love of Jesus. Isn't that wonderful? (let them answer) I think so. All of the people here this morning are sharing the love of Jesus with one another and they are going to take it home. They are going to take it to school and they are going to take it to work. Isn't that wonderful? (let them answer)
Of course, it doesn't always work out that way. The writer of the book in the Bible called Second John says that some people don't think the words of the Father and Jesus are enough. They want to add something to it. They want to add their own rules or tell people like you and me that they should not only believe what God teaches but something extra. Maybe they want you to let a poisonous snake bite you so that you can prove you are a better Christian. Sometimes they want you to eat a special food or not eat certain kinds of food because they think it will make you a better Christian.
Let me show you what I mean. Let me add a little something to my pitcher of water. (pour in the clear oil) Now, I would like to fill your cup again and ask you to taste my new drink. (let them try it; many will not and that is all right) Do you like the taste? (let them answer) Some of you didn't taste it and that is all right because what I added makes the water taste different. It is something added and the water doesn't need it.
That is the way it is with God. We can't improve what he taught us and when we try it makes it bad. Be a believer. Trust Jesus. Learn from the Bible and you will have what God promised.
