Advent 1
Poems
A Gospel Treasury
Poems Based on Lectionary Gospels
Many people try to tell us
What our future holds,
How we'll prosper, how we'll fail
And what our life enfolds.
Nostradamus, Edgar Cayce
And economists
All would tell us of tomorrow,
Clear away the mists.
Tarot cards and Ouija boards,
If used without restriction,
Each would give us, if we listen,
All our life's predictions.
Even though they sometimes tempt us
With their siren song,
I for one, am very thankful,
Mostly, they are wrong.
Even though it might be nice
To know about tomorrow,
By and large, I'd rather wait
To know its joy and sorrow.
If the future can be known,
Then it must be immutable.
And, if that's the way it is,
I'm glad it is inscrutable.
I believe that God has made
The future rather "iffy"
So that I might find it changed
Completely in a jiffy.
It's good to feel my life can change
One day from six to seven,
For in that hour, my goal could change
From nothingness to heaven.
