The Kingdom Grows
Children's sermon
Object:
magnifying glass and a tiny seed and a twig
“The kingdom of God... is like a mustard seed....” (v.31)
Good morning little ones and big ones too,
Do you know how tall you are? (children answer)
Do you know how much you weigh? (children volunteer answers)
Next to adults are you big or little? (children answer)
Children usually are considered small -- but are growing. Are you growing?
Look, I have here a tiny seed. When you look at it under a magnifying glass you can see how teeny weeny it really is. (children examine the seed) I promise you that this seed will one day grow up and become beautiful and useful.
Did you know that all great things in life begin tiny? Then, like a miracle, small and tiny things grow into something big and important and useful.
Take for example, in music, there are only eight notes in an octave.
But these eight notes grow into wonderful songs and lullabies and symphonies!
Take the alphabet. The alphabet has only 26 letters. But those 26 letters make stories and histories, and poetry! Jesus was little -- born in a wee little manger. Yet, like Jesus, little, tiny things become great and large and amazing.
Jesus once said that the kingdom of God is like a tiny, tiny mustard seed. And this tiny, tiny seed grows into a tree-like shrub so big that birds can rest on its branches. Like the mustard seed, the kingdom of God expands and grows all over the world as it has for thousands of years. You and I are a part of that kingdom.
You may feel like a twig or tiny seed, but God is growing something inside your heart.
You are God's garden in which seeds within you grow and flourish and provide amazing gifts for others. God is growing faith. God is growing love. God is growing hope.
Prayer: We may be small Lord, but grow us up in your truth and love. Amen.
