Give Your Life To The Lord

Matthew To Revelation
Object:
a doll or teddy bear
Good morning, boys and girls. How many of you have a very special doll or stuffed animal that belongs to you? (let them answer) Almost all of you. What do you call your friend? (let them answer) A lot of people have a friend that looks like this. (hold up your teddy bear, hopefully one that is well worn) I call him Teddy. Do any of you call your bear "Teddy"? (let them answer) A lot of you have Teddy bears. That's wonderful. How many of you sleep with Teddy? (let them answer) Does your friend ever eat with you or watch television with you? (let them answer) A Teddy bear can be a very good friend and a lot of fun to share good times with.

I guess the best part of having a Teddy bear is that the teddy bear belongs to me. No one else owns Teddy. Teddy does what I want him to do, goes where I want him to go, sleeps when I want him to sleep and eats when I want him to eat. That's what I mean when I say that Teddy belongs to me. Since Teddy belongs to me, I can share him with you if I want to. I can even give Teddy away if I want to. Of course, if I gave him away, then he would belong to someone else and that person could do the same things with him that I do with him now.

God the Father loved Jesus even more than I love Teddy or more than you love your friend. Jesus belonged to the Father and the Father belonged to Jesus. They shared life together. The Father and Jesus had a plan about how they were going to share the life of Jesus with all of the people in the world. It was their life and they could do whatever they wanted to with it. Just like you can do whatever you want to with your friend Teddy. God decided to offer the life of Jesus for our sins. It was God's plan to have Jesus die for our sins and use up his life so that we would not die forever. God could do this with Jesus' life because it belonged to him. Now there was more to the plan than just dying. God also decided that after Jesus suffered and died he would give him back his life. God could do that also because even when Jesus was dead he belonged to God. So God gave back to Jesus his life.

The same thing can happen to you and me. If God owns your life like he owned Jesus and you own Teddy, then he can give you back your life after you die. God is so good that he will only do what is best for you. So you can belong to God like Jesus did and just like Teddy belongs to me and your friend belongs to you. That is a super plan and one that all of us should follow.

Remember, God will take even better care of your life, if you give it to him, than you take care of friends like Teddy.

When does the status quo no longer seem to be working? In her book, The Last Flight Julie Clark begins with the seemingly flawlessly choreographed life of Claire Cook, the wife of a wealthy politician at the peak of this political dynasty. Despite the elegant surroundings of the Manhattan townhouse, staff of ten servants, life behind closed doors is different. Her husband Rory has a hot temper, and is abusive. There is also the memory of the mysterious death of his first wife.

How long? Will the hearts of the prophets ever turn back—those who prophesy lies, and who prophesy the deceit of their own heart? (Jeremiah 23:26)

You hypocrites! You know how to interpret the appearance of earth and sky, but why do you not know how to interpret the present time? (Luke 12:56)

Hello, everyone! (Let them respond.) Are you ready for our story today? (Let them respond.) Great! Let’s get started. But I need to warn you that this is a really strange story. At least the things that Jesus says sound really strange. But let’s see if we can figure out what the story is really all about.

(Show the fire extinguisher.)  This is a little reminder that sometimes it is really hard to follow Jesus and do what he wants us to do!

Call to Worship:

Jesus said that life would not be easy for Christians, but calls us to stand up for our beliefs. In our worship today let us acknowledge and explore the difficulties of standing as a Christian in today's society.

Invitation to Confession:

Jesus, sometimes we find it easier to go with the flow than to stand against other people.

Lord, have mercy.

Jesus, sometimes we feel overwhelmed by the number of people who ignore you.

Christ, have mercy.

49"I came to bring fire to the earth, and how I wish it were already kindled! 50I have a baptism with which to be baptized, and what stress I am under until it is completed! 51Do you think that I have come to bring peace to the earth? No, I tell you, but rather division! 52From now on five in one household will be divided, three against two and two against three; 53they will be divided:
father against son
and son against father,
mother against daughter
and daughter against mother,
mother-in-law against her

This passage is famously known as Isaiah's "Song of the Vineyard." It begins with the prophet singing, in what we would describe as troubadour-fashion, a love song about his dod, his friend, the beloved. Everyone is interested in a love affair, of course, and so the song is intended to capture the interest of Isaiah's listeners.

What can faith do? It can part a raging sea and allow a nation to walk through. What can faith do? It can knock down the walls of a fortified city so that God can prove a point. What can faith do? It can single out a woman who follows God's lead and protect her from certain death. Today many people are into "reality" television shows where individuals are put to extreme tests. We watch them because we like to see others battle against great odds and come out victorious.
