Object: some items that appear to be for sale with prices marked on them
Good morning, boys and girls. I am certainly glad that you came to church this morning because I am looking for customers. I have some of the most wonderful things for sale today, and I hope that you have brought your money with you so that you can buy whatever you like.
First of all, I have this lovely sweater. It was made by a wonderful knitter who took lots of time and loving care to make it for a person just like you. This sweater is only $11.99 and I hope you will choose it. I also have delightful stocking caps to go with the sweater. Since we are going into spring and the winter is over, these stocking caps are on sale today. If you buy them now you can save money for next year. These hats are a special buy, and you can have one for only $1.39. That is a real bargain. What else do I have with me today? I have beautiful jewelry that I would be willing to sell at the right price. Would anyone like to make an offer for my jewelry? (let them answer)
What do you think of this? Is this what you expected to find when you came to church this morning? (let them answer) When was the last time you came to church and found yourself shopping in a store? (let them answer) It doesn't seem right, does it? What's wrong with selling clothes, jewelry, or anything else in church? (let them answer)
That's right; this is God's house and it is not a place to do business. Jesus found people selling animals and other things in the temple when he was in Jerusalem, and he drove them out of the temple telling them that God's house was not a store. It is a place to worship and pray and not to make bargains.
There is nothing wrong with buying and selling in a store. That is where it should be done. But we should never buy and sell in God's house. This is a special place where we can share our lives with God. We come here to listen to God's word, to sing hymns of praise, to pray quietly with God, and to tell him of our problems and ask for his help. We can't do that if we are selling and buying.
Jesus actually took off his belt when he went into the temple to pray and waved it in the air and told the people to take their goods and leave the temple. Jesus was very angry with what he found in the temple. We need always to remember what God's house is meant to be and make sure that we are here to worship and not here to do anything else.
The next time you hear about a special bargain I hope it is in the store and not in God's house.
