Get Ready, Get Set...
Children's sermon

Object:
Come dressed in a jogging suit or ask one of the children to come dressed that way. (Also you could use a picture of a person in a jogging suit.)
Today I need your help. I can't remember what we say when we start out on a race. I'm all dressed for the race (or a certain child is all dressed). Let's see, I think it goes something like ready, set, ______ hmm can't remember the word. Can you help me out? Ready, set, "GO" (Let kids yell it out.)
Do you know that word is in our story today? Jesus was sending out 72 Christians to go and tell people about God and he said to them in Luke 10:3, "GO, I am sending you out like lambs among wolves." Jesus had told them it wouldn't be easy; in fact he described it like a lamb going among wolves. It gives us the idea that it could be a bit scary! In the same way, when someone races it isn't easy but it is a struggle to race to the finish line. But when you cross over the finish line, you know it was all worth it.
How many of us are still at the "get set" position? We are always learning and training but never make the next step to "GO". When you do "GO" and cross the finish line of what God has asked you to do there is incredible joy and excitement. The same was true for these 72 Christians as it says that they returned with joy. Even though you are young now, God tells us in his word in 1 Timothy 4:12, "Don't let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith and in purity.
There is a story of a young girl that had missionaries staying in her home. They had a big snow storm and so she went out to shovel the snow and she got paid for it. Guess what she decided to do with that money? She gave it to the missionaries. In fact, she gave them their first donation. You see, God even uses kids!
So how can we apply this to our lives? What can we do?
We need to pray for more people to actually do as the Bible says in our story today in Luke 10:2. Pray that the Lord will send out workers. The sign up list is very short for such amazing jobs and opportunities.
