Jesus, Ruler Of The Universe
Children's sermon
Null
Object:
a clear glass of water and one of a red wine
The Point: this miracle reveals that Jesus has authority over the material world
The Lesson: Good morning, boys and girls. Thank you for joining me as we share God’s word together.
Today, I brought two glasses. (show both glasses to children) As you can see one is filled with a clear liquid. Do you want to guess what the liquid is? (let the children respond) That is right. It is water. This glass is filled with a red liquid. What do you think this liquid is? (let the children respond) That is a good guess. Yes, it is red wine.
If you want some water, all you have to do is go to a water faucet and turn it on. If your parents wanted to have some wine, they can go to a store and buy some. They can make their own wine as several people I know do. If they made their own wine, they have to begin by crushing some grapes. Or they could get some grape juice. Then they add sugar and other ingredients. After a while it becomes wine. It takes good grapes, skill and effort, and weeks and weeks to make wine.
John tells us in our Bible reading that Jesus’ mother came to him for help. They were at a wedding party, and the host of the wedding ran out of wine. People had traveled for weeks to get to the wedding and now there was no wine. Jesus’ mother asked Jesus to help out. He asked the servants to bring jugs of water. Then he told them to take the jugs to the wedding steward who found that the jugs of water were now jugs of wine. Not just ordinary wine but the very best wine. It was a miracle. It was an act that only God could do.
The miracle reveals to us the special nature and character of Jesus. Jesus is truly God’s Son. The Bible tells us that this was Jesus’ first miracle. The large volume of the water turned to wine and the excellent quality of that wine tell us that Jesus has authority over all creation. Jesus is the ruler of the material universe. It also tells us one more thing about Jesus. The Son of God is merciful and cares about the needs of others. This first miracle foreshadows Jesus’ greatest miracle: His death and resurrection for the forgiveness of our sins.
Prayer: Let us unite our hands and hearts together as we pray. Jesus, today we see in the miracle you performed your authority over all of creation. Help us to take care of your world. And because you care about the needs of others, help us to always care about others too. Jesus, in your holy name we pray. Amen.
