Unexpected God, Awful Times In My Life Occur Out Of The Blue...
Intercession
Prayers usually include these concerns and may follow this sequence:
The Church of Christ
Creation, human society, the Sovereign and those in authority
The local community
Those who suffer
The communion of saints
These responses may be used:
Lord, in your mercy
Hear our prayer
Lord, hear us.
Lord, graciously hear us.
Unexpected God, awful times in my life occur out of the blue, when I'm least ready for them. Help me to prepare in advance, by really getting to know you, by absorbing you into my innermost being, so that when it's crunch time I'm ready to receive your love and support and strength and comfort. Help me to face the sin which I keep most deeply buried, so that I may enjoy your love for me as you planned for me to enjoy it. So unexpected God, please help me to fill my extra flask with oil. And then remind me to take it with me wherever I go.

Unexpected God, your Church is so often like the foolish bridesmaids. We fail to read the writing on the wall in order to prevent or minimise disasters, and then we wonder why things have gone wrong and why society seems to be against us. Help us to read the signs and to be ready. Encourage us and enable us to be a part of society not apart from it, and to respond to the needs of society as you would have us respond.
With Christians world-wide we pray especially today for your Church in Burundi with Archbishop Samuel Ndayisenga and your Church in Liverpool (UK) with Bishop James Jones.

Unexpected God, we know that you appear in all sorts of unexpected guises and in all sorts of unexpected places. Help us remember that what we do for the least of your children, we do for you, and that what we fail to do for others, we fail to do for you. Keep the plight of the weakest and most vulnerable constantly before us, and make us face their misery even when we want to turn away. So raise our consciousness about the predicament of the homeless and the hungry, the poor and the sick, that we may ever strive to do something to change their lot. We pray especially today for...

Unexpected God, we pray for those in our own community who refuse to prepare to meet with you. Open their eyes that they might see, and their ears that they might hear. Give them a glimpse of the delights and joys you have waiting for them and enable them to feel your huge love for them, that they might come home to you.
