Gracious God, whose boundless love has brought us to this place of refuge, the foot of your cross, we come in thanksgiving for the generosity of your love. We seek your compassion and forgiveness for our sins of omission and commission. We confess our weak wills even as we look to you for strength. Precious Lord, with grateful hearts we come in thanksgiving for your sacrifice of love. Thank you for opening the gates of heaven to us that we might claim our place with you in paradise. Remember us, O God, as we strive to live and die with you, so that we may be with you for all eternity. Amen.

HYMN
SCRIPTURE LESSON
John 19:25-27
MEDITATION ON THE THIRD WORD
PRAYER
God of love and power, in your gentle wisdom you call us together as one family in you. We have allowed differences of race and sex and culture to separate us from one another and even from you.
Make us one again by your Holy Spirit. Unite us in the family of your Son Jesus Christ, who is our brother and our Lord. Amen.
SILENT MEDITATION
THE FOURTH WORD
"My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?"
HYMN
SCRIPTURE LESSONS
Psalm 22:1-5 and Matthew 27:45-50
MEDITATION ON THE FOURTH WORD
PRAYER
We gather at the foot of your cross, gentle Savior, brought together from the empty places of our scattered lives. Too often we wander away from you, only to cry out in anguish as we find ourselves in wilderness places. We hide from you, only to discover that we are lost without you. Open our eyes to see you, our ears to hear you and our hearts to love you, as you gather us to yourself. Help us to be mindful of your holy presence in our lives always. Amen.
SILENT MEDITATION
THE FIFTH WORD
"I am thirsty."
HYMN
SCRIPTURE LESSONS
Isaiah 55:1-2 and John 19:28-29
MEDITATION ON THE FIFTH WORD
PRAYER
We hunger and thirst for your righteousness, O God. You invite us to feast at your heavenly table but we turn instead to the food that sustains the body and withers the soul. Quench our thirsty spirits with the life-giving water of your love. Fill our hearts to overflowing, so that we may share with others as we have received from you, through Jesus Christ our Savior. Amen.
SILENT MEDITATION
THE SIXTH WORD
"It is finished."
HYMN
SCRIPTURE LESSON
John 19:30
MEDITATION ON THE SIXTH WORD
PRAYER
God of our weary years, we are grateful that you are with us as we struggle through life's toilsome journey. Often the way seems endless and the goal lost to our sight. We are tempted to give up because the journey is long and the road is rough. Guide us when we are lost; lift us up when we fall; strengthen us when we are tempted to give up. By your Holy Spirit, give us the grace we need to persevere, that we might endure to the end. Amen.
SILENT MEDITATION
THE SEVENTH WORD
"Father, into your hands I commend my spirit!"
HYMN
SCRIPTURE LESSONS
Psalm 31:1-16 and Luke 23:44-46
MEDITATION ON THE SEVENTH WORD
PRAYER
Most holy Lord and God, we praise and glorify you for the love that we have received through your son Jesus Christ. We thank you, O God, that we can turn to you in all things, that we can commit our whole selves to you. We are yours, O God. All that we have and are come from you. Now we give ourselves to you. Accept our sacrifice of praise for your great love. Receive us to yourself and use us to your glory, in the name of Jesus Christ we pray. Amen.
SILENT MEDITATION
LITANY OF DELIVERANCE
Leader: Our Lord and God, you created us in your image, and gave us the joy of your creation, yet we have rejected your love.
People: Have mercy upon us, Gracious God.
Leader: Even when we transgressed your laws and disobeyed your commands, you sent Jesus Christ to be our Savior.
People: Save us and help us, merciful Savior.
Leader: You gave us your Holy Spirit to be our comforter and guide, but we have sought to follow our own way, only to be led astray.
People: Redeem us, O Lord.
Leader: In our times of prosperity and success, we allowed ourselves to be tempted by the world and forgot to return our thanks to you.
People: Forgive us, O God.
Leader: When the troubles of life come upon us, we groan in sickness and pain and are unwilling to claim your healing, whole-making power.
People: Deliver us, gracious God.
Leader: We live in fear and dread of the time when our life on earth will come to an end, even though you promise to receive us into your everlasting kingdom.
People: Save and sanctify us, O God.
Leader: Help us to accept the gift of grace you offer in your death and resurrection, that we may live by faith in your abounding love.
People: Hear and bless us, we beseech you, O God.
Leader: And now with the confidence of children of God, let us pray as Christ taught us:
THE LORD'S PRAYER
HYMN
BENEDICTION
May God who brought Jesus from the dead, who washed you clean by his most precious blood, make you perfect in every good work that you may do the will of God.
