O LORD, Our Sovereign, How Majestic Is Your Name
Devotional
Companion to the Psalter
A Devotional Guide to the Psalms
Object:
O LORD, our Sovereign,
how majestic is your name in all the earth! ...
When I look at your heavens, the work of your fingers,
the moon and the stars that you have established;
what are human beings that you are mindful of them,
mortals that you care for them?
-- Psalm 8:1, 3-4
Theme: Divine majesty and human dignity
Outline
1-2 -- The revelation of Yahweh's majesty on earth.
3-4 -- The vastness of the heavens make man seem puny.
5-6 -- But man is more wonderful than all nature.
7-8 -- A human is your representative on earth.
9 -- Chorus (v. 1).
Notes
• Praise -- Creation
• "Your name" = your reputation, from the works of creation and providence.
For Reflection
• Jesus quotes verse 2 in reply to the Pharisees at his triumphal entry. (See Matthew 21:16.)
• "Jehovah has ordained that even the feeblest representatives of humanity should be his champions to confound and silence those who oppose his kingdom and deny his goodness ... The mystery of man of a being made in the image of God, is greater than the mystery of the heavens, with all their immensity and majesty ... Man, therefore, even in the weakness of childhood, is a witness of the existence and character of God."1
• See how Saint Paul in 1 Corinthians 15:27 and the writer of the letter to the Hebrews (2:6 ff) apply the psalm to the supremacy of Christ.
Prayer
Lord God, our creator, you created us for great things, and you crown us with glory and honor in the gift of your Son, Jesus Christ. By his Spirit within may we be led to praise you with good stewardship of the earth, showing care for the redemption of all that you have made. In the name of Jesus Christ our Lord.
