Familiar Expressions from the Bible
Object:
Expression: The straight and narrow
Location: Matthew 7:13-14
Verse: For wide is the gate, and broad [easy] is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat: Because strait [hard] is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it.
"The straight and narrow" has become in present-day language an expression describing the road of righteousness for the life of a person.
I have fond memories of my years of being active in the Boy Scouts. We experienced some exciting moments when we would launch our canoes out onto the scenic Harpeth River on the outskirts of Nashville.
The river varied in its width as we traveled downstream. As the river curved and snaked its way below the overhanging magnolia trees, we would often find ourselves paddling our canoes through some very narrow sections of the river while dodging the rocks. In fact, there is one place on the river which is known as "The Narrows" at the old Montgomery Bell property.
It was easy to move our canoes through the water at the broad parts of the river. Some of us would get a little lax in observing how we operated our canoes. But, when we got to the narrow sections of the river, we worked hard to maneuver our canoes properly. At that time, we became more serious, dedicated, unselfish, devoted, and committed. And, we found success.
In these verses from Matthew, Jesus tells us that the gateway to eternal life is very narrow. Jesus also tells us that he is the gate (John 10:7).
