Familiar Expressions from the Bible
Object:
Expression: Forget the past
Location: Philippians 3:13
Verse: ... but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind [in the past], and reaching forth [forward] unto those things which are before [ahead].
The apostle Paul wrote a letter to the people of Philippi around the year 61 A.D. while he was imprisoned in Rome. Even in prison Paul's faith endured, and he was determined to serve God and to teach others.
It was in this letter that Paul wrote the famous words of truth: "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me" (Philippians 4:13). Paul relied on Christ for his abiding strength. In this letter, Paul wrote also the words in the verse above.
Of course, we realize that we are not to forget the past in every way. We must live up to what we have already attained. Our knowledge is to carry us on. We are able to profit from our past experience. But Paul is saying that he is pressing forward to an even higher calling.
We must realize that as children of God we are forgiven for our past sins. We need to move on to a higher calling in a life of faith and obedience because of our hope in God.
