Pastoral Prayers For All Seasons
Object:
Summer is more than half spent, O God, and we continue to rejoice in growing things. Our vegetable and flower gardens are giving us nourishing food and glorious color.
Often, dear Creator, we don't think of you in the midst of our activities. But when we stop -- even for a few seconds -- to study the vegetable, the flower that has emerged from the soil, that only a few weeks ago was a seed, it is a quick revelation of joy and hope.
How orderly your world is. The seasons come and go in the same pattern. The earth, planets, and stars follow a very precise travel log around and in between each other. The animals and birds follow an inner clock that tells them when to leave one point to go to another -- at just the right time!
Our Creator, just when we think we understand the orderliness of your world, you stun us with a tornado or a flood. You bring us a new insight into the make-up of your world, a new learning that scuttles our thinking of the past. Then we come to realize that we don't know all your ways. You live in a way that is different from ours. Your life is bigger than ours; your purposes include us but they also reach far beyond. Your power is awesome. Your ability to nurture and care bring us into experiences of joy and love we can scarcely imagine.
We become humble in your presence. We become quiet and in the silence we begin to learn who you are all over again.
In the name of Jesus Christ we pray. Amen.
