The Sermon:
This month we have a special holiday called Memorial Day. It is a day for remembering someone we love who has died. On this day, people visit graves and decorate them with *flowers or flags. Some will go to church and some will gather and listen to speeches. We like to remember good things about people who are no longer with us.
The Bible talks about remembering in Psalm 112. Verse 6 says, "For the righteous will never be moved; they will be remembered for ever."
What kind of person is remembered forever? A righteous person. What does righteous mean? Psalm 112 tells us that righteous people have their hearts firm and secure in the Lord (v. 7). They have trusted in Jesus as their Lord and Savior and they try to live a life that pleases him. They are generous and give to the poor (v. 9). They are gracious and merciful (v. 4). That means they are kind, forgiving, and do no harm to others. They are like a light (v. 4) showing others how to live.
God loves to bring this kind of person home to be with him as Psalm 116:15 says, "Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of his faithful ones."
Sometimes we are sad on this holiday because we miss those who are gone, but we can be glad, too, that we know and have known God's good people who will always be remembered. They encourage us to live a life that pleases Jesus, too.
