31 Object Lessons from Nature
Object:
a flat of soil, grass seeds, and a pitcher of water
Scripture: Luke 8:11
Now the parable is this: The seed is the word of God.
Material: a flat of soil, grass seeds, and a pitcher of water
Do you know what, boys and girls? In my backyard I have a garden. In the garden, I plant tomato seeds to get tomatoes. I plant radish seeds to get radishes. I plant lettuce seeds to get lettuce. Every seed grows exactly what it was meant to grow. That is the way God planned it. He said that each seed would bear fruit after its own kind.
But today (indicate your soil and seeds), I am planting grass seeds. I have some good, rich soil right here and I have some seeds that came from grass plants, so I know they will grow into grass. (begin planting as you talk) I'll just stir my soil up a little here so the little grass seeds can put down some roots. I'll spread the grass seeds around. Did you know that is called "sowing"? It sounds like what you do with a needle and thread, but it's not the same. This is "sowing seeds." I'm going to sow lots and lots of seeds in here so I can have a nice, lush garden of grass. Then I'll pat the soil down over my seeds and add a little water. There! We're done. Now we just have to wait and see what happens to my little garden here.
You know what? God has a garden, too. We are God's garden! Do you know what kind of seed he sows in us? His Word. Whenever we hear the Word of God at church, or Mom and Dad tell us a Bible story ... even when we read the Bible for ourselves ... God is sowing his word into our hearts. God's Word is the seed that makes us grow more and more like Jesus. Let's make sure we let God sow lots of seed in us!
