31 Object Lessons from Nature
Object:
butterflies in a jar (If your butterflies have cooperated, they should be ready to fly by now.)
Scripture: Luke 24:51-53
While he was blessing them, he withdrew from them and was carried up into heaven. And they worshiped him, and returned to Jerusalem with great joy; and they were continually in the temple blessing God.
Material: butterflies in a jar (If your butterflies have cooperated, they should be ready to fly by now.)
Okay, boys and girls, what do you think? Our baby butterflies are all grown up! (show the jar filled with butterflies) Aren't they beautiful? Remember when they were just little eggs and we could hardly see them? We had to believe that those eggs would hatch, didn't we? We had to believe what we could not see. That's faith!
Then we had caterpillars. Those little guys ate and ate. We learned that the baby butterflies grow by feeding on green leaves, just like we grow by feeding on the Word of God. Did you feed on the Word of God this week, boys and girls? (let them answer)
Last week our little friends were chrysalises, wrapped up in their little bags just like Jesus was wrapped up in the garden tomb. But look at them now! Just like Jesus came out of the tomb, our butterflies have come out of their little sleeping bags.
But, boys and girls, do these butterflies belong in this cage? No. They need to fly, don't they? Well, that makes me think of Jesus, too. Probably after Jesus was raised from the dead, his friends wanted him to stay with them forever. But Jesus still had work to do. So, after a few days of visiting with his friends, Jesus ascended into heaven. That big word means that Jesus went up into heaven as his friends watched him and they worshiped God.
Let's let these butterflies go, shall we? And as we watch them go, we will think about Jesus ascending into heaven and we will worship God. (take the class outside or go to a window to release the butterflies)
