Ants Work Best Together
31 Object Lessons from Nature
Object:
ant farm
Scripture: Exodus 23:2
You shall not follow a majority in wrongdoing; when you bear witness in a lawsuit, you shall not side with the majority so as to pervert justice.
Material: ant farm
Hi, boys and girls. This is our last week to talk about our little friends the ants. (indicate ant farm) We have learned so much from these little guys! Through the ants, God has shown us that we can get a lot done if we just don't quit, and if we work together. He has also taught us to store up our treasures in heaven. Today I want you to notice one more thing about ants.
Do you know that song that goes, "the ants go marching one by one"? (sing the song) Well, when I see ants, especially the ones who are marching along in my kitchen, I always see them in a trail. They walk one behind the other. They don't go over this way (demonstrate by wandering around the front of the room), or over that way. (more wandering) They follow right along in a line. (march across the front of the room) Sometimes they meet some ants that are coming back along the trail and they take their little antennae and go like this. (imitate an ant with your hands on your forehead like antennae) But they stay right on their trail, don't they? Every ant follows the other. In fact, you can walk back along the ant trail and find out where they are coming from, like this. (imitate following an ant trail along the wall or floor)
Following is good. These ants follow each other to find food and to know where to work. We should follow, too. We should follow Jesus, our parents, our teachers, and our good Christian friends. If we follow good examples, we will get to where we want to go.
There is a different kind of following that is not good. Sometimes we are tempted to follow a bad example. Sometimes we want to do something that we know is not right just because we see everybody else doing it! Let's learn a lesson from the ants and follow after a good example, not a bad one.
