The Lord's Prayer In "New Haven"
Children's sermon
Story Time At The Altar

Once upon a time in a town called "New Haven," the mother sat on her son's bed and they talked together about the good things and the bad things that had happened that day. Then Bill's mother explained to him that in prayer Bill could talk with God that same way.
Bill listened and nodded his head. He knew about talking with God. That was the way he prayed.
"Mommie, last Sunday I learned the way Jesus' friends prayed. It's called 'The Lord's Prayer.' "
His mother asked, "Would you like to pray it now?"
Bill nodded his head again and said, "Our Father, which art in New Haven, how do you know my name?"
The mother kissed Bill good night, turned out the light, and left the door open.
The next day she went to her minister. She was worried about Bill's prayer.
The minister asked, "What is it?"
Bill's mother replied, "Our Father, which art in New Haven, how do you know my name?"
The minister said, "I wouldn't change a word of the way he says the Lord's Prayer, for it shows he understands two important things about God: first, that God is very near, in New Haven (in our hometown), second, that God knows him closely, personally knows his name."
Talk together: Does God know your name?
"Our Father who art in heaven ..." Some young children think God's name in heaven is "Art," and some, hearing "hallowed be your name," think God's name is "Harold." What do you call God?
Prayer: Thank you, God, for being near and knowing my name. Amen.
