A sheet of paper and a pen or marker.
Today is a special day for us. Who knows what today is? (Children respond.) Yes, indeed, today is Mother's Day. Why do we celebrate Mother's Day? (Children respond.) We celebrate Mother's Day to tell our mothers we love them and that we are thankful for everything they do for us.
For our time together this morning, we are going to write a Mother's Day letter to Mom and talk about some gifts we can give her. I brought paper and pen and you are going to tell me what to write. How should we begin our letter? (Children respond.) Dear Mom.... (Put the children's ideas into short notes that you can jot down quickly. Help them include elements of thanks and gratitude, love, and appreciation, and a few specifics. Don't worry about the organization of the letter. You will read it to the mothers in the congregation when it is finished.)
You've said many nice things. This is a wonderful letter. I'm going to read it to all the moms in the congregation. (Read the letter.)
We've written a Mother's Day note, but what about a Mother's Day present? Anybody got some money so we can go buy some Mother's Day gifts? Oh no, what shall we do? If we don't have money to buy Mom a gift, what can we give her on her special day? (Children respond.) Someone said we could make a gift, and that's a great idea. What else could we do, any ideas? (Children respond.) We can give Mom some gifts that don't cost money. We could give Mom a present by not misbehaving during the rest of the worship service. We could give her a gift by not talking back or fighting with our little brother or sister today. She would count it a special gift if we did what we were told without whining or complaining. The most precious gift we could give her today is a big hug. Let's be sure to tell her how glad we are that she is our mom.
There are many gifts we can give Mom, but the best gifts come from our hearts, not from a store. Remember that today is her day, and we need to do everything we can to let her know she is loved, wanted, and appreciated.
Be sure to say a special prayer for your mother today. I'll pray for you this week and you pray for me.
God bless you.
