Traffic Signals

Object:
A picture or model of a traffic signal, if available.
Look what I've got today. (Display picture.) Do you know what this is? (Children respond.) This is a picture of a traffic signal. Do you know what the different colors mean? How about the light at the top, the red one, what does it mean? (Children respond.) It means "stop." It doesn't mean slow down a lot or go slow. It means "stop" all the way, so you are not moving. I know someone who almost stopped at a red light, but the tires on the car were still rolling just a little. There was a policeman nearby and my friend got a ticket for not stopping at a red light. Red means "stop."
How about the light in the middle, the yellow one? What does it mean? (Children respond. You may have to offer help for this one.) This means "yield." Yield is a word you may not hear very often. It means "slow down" and "look out for the other guy." When you yield, you may have to slow down and wait for someone else to go first.
You are doing a great job with this. I can tell you are going to be good drivers. The last light is easy. What does the green one mean? (Children respond.) "Go!" We all like that one, because we don't have to wait any longer.
Did you know that when we pray to God, he gives us answers like a traffic light? It's true. Sometimes we pray, and God says, "Stop." (Point to the red light.) God is telling us, "No." We may be asking God for something that is not good for us or for something that is not in God's plan for us. We may not like getting a red light from God, but when that happens, it's for our own good.
Other times when we pray, God says, "Yield, slow down." God is not saying, "No," but he is not saying, "Yes," either. When God gives us the yellow light (point to the yellow light) he wants us to take it easy and slow down a bit. Maybe it's not the right time for what we want. We may not like the yellow light any better than we like the red one, but if we trust God, we believe God knows what is best.
Most of us like the green light best. (Point to the green light.) When we get a green light from God, we know that God has said "Yes" to our prayer. We all like to get a "Yes."
A traffic signal is important when we are driving so we will know what to do and so we will be safe. God gives us answers to our prayers that help us know what to do and that lead us in the right way. God always knows what is best for us.
When you pray this week, pay attention to whether God says, "Stop," "Slow down," or "Go." God bless you.
