How Much Do You Want?
Children's sermon

Children's Sermons
Object:
A large cup or mug, a smaller cup or mug, and a thimble.
Message: How many of you like to go out to eat? Isn't it great to be able to go to a restaurant and to pick out what you want to eat! What are some of your favorite things to eat when you go out? The thing I like best about eating is not only picking out what I want to eat, but also being able to decide on the size I want. If I am really thirsty I can get a supersized drink; but on the days when I'm not so thirsty, I can buy a smaller one.
Deciding on an amount that we want to receive is also something that people in Jesus' day were doing. They didn't have all the restaurants we have to choose from, but they made a choice when they came to talk with Jesus. They were some people who came to see Jesus who knew they needed His power in their lives. They were like people who came with a large cup like this one and said, "Lord, fill my life because I know I need your healing and strength!" Then there were others who came with questions. They were not really sure if Jesus was the Son of God. They didn't really know if they wanted to follow Him. They did know that His words spoke to their hearts and they needed something more in their lives. They came with a smaller cup and said, "Lord, I don't have faith yet, but I would like to have faith, please touch my heart also." There were others who came to Jesus and really had no intention of following Him at all. They were the Pharisees and other Jewish leaders who wanted only to question and trap Jesus. They came with a little thimble and said, "I don't have any room in my life for you, Jesus, so don't try to change my life!"
Just as those people came to Christ and responded in different ways to Him, so it is with us today. Jesus looks at our hearts. He wants to know how much room we have in our lives for Him as Lord and Savior. As we come here on Sunday it is with one of these cups. A large one means we recognize our need for God and want Him to lead and direct us. A medium-sized one means we are not sure, but we want Jesus to speak to us and give us more faith. Or a small one means we want to be in control of our own lives and we simply don't need God.
Which one do you think God wants us to come with? That's right, He wants us to come with open hearts and lives so that Jesus can fill us!
